1988 Gozzard 36 Cutter - CALICOA Rare Gozzard with Exceptional Character, Craftsmanship & Freshwater History

There are boats that look attractive in photographs - and there are yachts that make you stop and look twice when you walk down the dock.

CALICO is one of those yachts.

From her graceful clipper bow and bowsprit to the distinctive decorative scrollwork along her hull, beautifully varnished teak, bronze winches and substantial bronze hardware, CALICO has the presence of a traditional cruising yacht from an era when craftsmanship and detail mattered.

This is not a production sailboat simply dressed up to look traditional. CALICO is a Gozzard, built with the robust construction, distinctive styling and attention to detail for which these Canadian-built cruising yachts have long been admired.

And this particular Gozzard is something special.

According to her owner, CALICO was custom built with several features that distinguish her from the standard Gozzard 36, including an additional port/window on each side of the cabin, extensive insulation throughout the yacht and a factory-installed bow thruster - an unusual and particularly useful feature on a traditional 36-foot cutter.

A Remarkable Freshwater History

The current owners purchased CALICO in 2012 after specifically searching for a Gozzard. They retained a yacht professional familiar with Gozzard yachts to assist them in finding the right boat and, after considering several examples, were directed to this particular yacht because of her unusual specifications, condition and equipment.

CALICO was subsequently taken to Flathead Lake, Montana, where she spent the great majority of the next fourteen years in freshwater.

Her use was seasonal, primarily during the summer months, and the owners report very little reliance on the engine.

Only recently has CALICO been brought from her freshwater home to the West Coast.

For a yacht built in 1988, that history is significant - and her condition reflects the care she has received.

Traditional Craftsmanship You Can See and Touch

One of the pleasures of walking aboard CALICO is discovering details that simply aren't commonly found on modern production sailboats.

Her bronze winches and extensive bronze hardware and fittings immediately reinforce the quality and traditional character of the yacht.

Her exterior is complemented by beautifully maintained teak. The bowsprit, cap rails, butterfly hatches, handrails, console area, boom crutch, dorade boxes and ship's wheel have all received attention to their varnish work.

Then there is the hull itself.

CALICO's graceful sheer, clipper bow and cutter profile are accented by the distinctive decorative scroll detailing along her hull sides - a finishing touch that gives this yacht an unmistakable identity.

She simply doesn't look like every other sailboat in the marina.

Built as a Serious Cruising Yacht

Beauty is only part of the story.

CALICO features a hand-laid molded fiberglass hull and deck with 1/2-inch end-grain balsa incorporated for sound and thermal insulation. Her original owner reportedly specified additional insulation throughout the yacht, helping make the interior more comfortable in both warm and cold climates.

She carries external lead ballast, substantial external chainplates and a traditional cutter rig designed around manageable cruising.

Her deck equipment includes a teak cockpit sole, stainless-steel lifelines with port and starboard gates, fold-down transom with swim ladder, stainless-steel dinghy davits, cockpit cushions, emergency tiller and saltwater anchor washdown.

Ground tackle includes a CQR anchor and substantial rode.

Bottom paint was renewed in August 2026.

Cutter Rigged for the Cruising Sailor

CALICO's cutter rig provides the versatility experienced cruising sailors appreciate, particularly when sailing short-handed or as a couple.

Her sail inventory and rigging include a mainsail, roller-furling genoa and self-tacking staysail with an adjustable athwartships track and Harken furling system.

Control lines are led aft to the cockpit.

She also carries a new asymmetrical sail of approximately 1,200 square feet, providing an additional option for lighter-air sailing.

A mast-mounted whisker pole, boom vang and substantial bronze self-tailing winches complete a sail-handling arrangement designed for practical cruising.

52 HP Westerbeke - Approximately 1,717 Hours

Auxiliary power is provided by a 52 HP Westerbeke diesel showing approximately 1,717 hours.

Considering CALICO's age, those hours help tell the story of a yacht that spent much of her recent life sailing seasonally on freshwater rather than accumulating years of continuous engine use.

Engine instrumentation includes tachometer, water-temperature gauge, oil-pressure gauge, voltmeter, fuel gauge, engine alarm and hour meter.

And when it's time to return to the marina, CALICO offers something rarely encountered on a traditional cutter of this size and vintage:

A factory-installed bow thruster.

That's a particularly welcome feature when maneuvering a traditional cruising yacht in tight quarters or when conditions make docking more challenging.

Updated Electrical System

CALICO received new batteries in 2025, consisting of four house batteries plus a dedicated engine-start battery.

Additional equipment includes shore power, inverter/charging capability, a 50-amp alternator, Xantrex LinkPRO battery monitoring and 120V GFCI-protected outlets in the galley, head and cabin.
